Taking Flight: Artistic Residency Announcement 2022 Every year, Taking Flight offers a number of artistic residencies to professional artists in the Irish industry or abroad. This is an initiative to support artists in their creation of works or professional development with full studio access for 1-4 weeks and funding to pay themselves and mentors/directors for their time.
In the last few years this residency has helped artists achieve their goals whatever they may be, this ranges from full show creation, creative collaboration experiments and technical developments.
We are so happy this year to offer 2 residencies. The first to the artistic image-making, shape-shifting Seve Feathers. Seve is a Dublin based image-maker using hand-balancing to make the invisible tangible. Seve is an emerging and award-winning performer and director who pushes the boundaries of circus, moulding it with visual arts and deep conceptual thought. Seve will be spending 2 weeks in our studios, working with multiple other creatives to enrich and create works which will be presented after her residency as a public showing in Taking Flight.
The second residency was awarded to Sean McIlraith and Monika Palova. This female creative duo strives to blur the lines of what circus is, to create visceral and implicit images through contemporary circus that that invite the audience to connect to the performers on a personally emotional level. Sean and Monika will be working with Megan Kennedy, one of the directors of the contemporary dance company ‘Junk Ensemble’. They will be using their time in our studios to develop their first full length show and develop their choreographic skills to understand exactly how to connect movement and meaning. As well as a public showing of their work once their residency is complete, both awardees will be hosting a workshop for the circus community, to share and include the community in their creative process.
